Part 3 · Reading
Passage
Shen Liang is the male lead of a novel, but something is wrong with him. He hears voices, breaks things, and loses his temper without reason. The female lead, Jiang Mian, is sent to stop him from going crazy. She enters his world as a maid. At first, Shen Liang treats her like everyone else — with coldness and anger. But Jiang Mian is different. She doesn’t run away. When he throws a cup at the wall, she calmly picks up the pieces. When he shouts, she waits quietly until he is done. One night, Shen Liang sat in the dark, shaking. Jiang Mian sat next to him and said nothing. After a long silence, he whispered, “Why aren’t you afraid of me?” She replied, “Because I can see that you are in pain, not dangerous.” Shen Liang looked at her for the first time without anger in his eyes. From that night on, he began to trust her. The voices didn’t stop, but he was no longer alone with them.
